The Goonch that Stole Fishmas

If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you know that I keep a running list of exotic fish that I want to capture.
Currently giant trevally occupy the top spot. Golden dorado aren’t far behind.
Of the fish that I’m more likely to catch in the near future, yellowfin tuna are numero uno. Someday I will bow down to the mighty tarpon.
But an article I read this weekend threw all of those plans and rankings into disarray.
I learned about the GOONCH.
It’s a species of catfish native to South Asia. They grow to over 200 pounds. According to some theories, they “have developed a taste for human flesh after feeding on corpses thrown into the river after funeral ceremonies” and have dragged bathers and swimmers from the shallows to a catfishy death. I don’t know if that’s true. Nor do I know how to catch one, or how well they fight. I don’t typically put catfish on my to-do list.
But I do know it would be badass to say that “I’m trying to catch a goonch.”
It’s the name that does it.
If all goes according to plan I’ll launch my GoonchCat as boat number one in the 2030 GoonchMaster Classic.
