I Paid Retail (and I’m glad I did) — Splitting the Bill

I’ve had the same wintertime ritual for nearly 25 years. I wait until we get a weekend day with absolute dog crap weather – heavy winds, indeterminate precipitation, and freezing temps – and I bring all of my boxes of hard baits into the house and go to work.

I try to sequester myself from the dog, because a face full of #6 round-bend trebles is not a good look for him, but I stay close to: (a) a television; (b) a coffee pot and; (c) a restroom (if you forego b, then you can keep your distance from c).

I take each of the baits out of its assigned space, make sure that it’s still worthy of a spot in the rotation, and then check the hardware for any imperfections. Faulty trebles and split rings get replaced. I know that some of you use fingers and fingernails for this task, but with me that would likely result in broken nails, gushing blood and perhaps a trip to the emergency room. Instead, I rely heavily on my Texas Tackle Split Ring Pliers. I don’t remember where I got them, or how long ago – it was somewhere between 10 and 20 years –but they are the best sub-twenty dollar purchase I’ve ever made. They do the job perfectly and whiel I’ve literally never done one second of maintenance, they perform exactly as well as they did they day I got them. They’re $17.99 at Tackle Warehouse right now, but they might’ve been even less back then.

I don’t know anyone at the company, so I have no vested interest in your purchase, and while I’m sure there are plenty of comparable products out there, this is one I can recommend wholeheartedly. In fact, I like them so much that I recently bought the heavy duty models for my big peacock bass woodchoppers.
