New Water, New Species, New Tactics — Take A Friend Fishing

Pete and Hanna take new friends on a fishing trip down to Panama

For years and years I lived in a bass-only bubble, where largemouths, smallmouths and (to a lesser extent) spots were all that I cared about it. I thought I was happy, I thought I was living my best angling life, but until I spread my wings a little more, I really didn’t know how good fishing could be.

As Hanna and I started our own website over the past 14 months, I’ve realized that my goal is not only to maximize my own casts, but also to encourage some of you to do the same. I recognize that not everyone wants to be “helped” in this way. Some of you are content, and can continue to be content, by remaining in your own bubbles, but I hope that those of you who can be convinced otherwise will hear me out.

Just because you’ve never fly fished, or billfished, or chased white perch, or popped for tuna, doesn’t mean it has to be that way forever. Hanna and I don’t have kids, so we didn’t get the semi-pleasure of introducing our own offspring to the game, but we’ve brought many people along on our journey. If you can introduce someone into your area of expertise, that’s great, but it’s just as good to find something new together. On our recent Panama trip, five of the six members of our group had never popped for tuna (or even caught a yellowfin). Most of us had never been to Panama. All of us just needed that little push to take the plunge – and now we’re all craving a return.

You don’t need my permission to try something new, but if you need a push I’d love to be the one to (safely) knock you off the ledge. I guarantee that done properly it’ll be a great flight.

As a side note, we’re headed back to Panama later this year – yes, we liked it that much – and at the time of this writing there are still a few spots on the trip. Even if that one doesn’t trip your trigger, reach out to us, and we’ll be happy to help you take baby steps or execute a full Triple Lindy into the deep end.
