Vote for Kennedy

I don’t watch much fishing television, and these days most of what I do watch either on TV or on YouTube takes place in the salt (yes, since first going to Guatemala for sailfish I’m pretty sure I’ve seen every video about the topic at least three times). Other than The Bassmasters, the only quasi-bass-world show I’ve looked forward to in recent years was Ike’s now-canceled “Fish My City.”

That said, if someone gave Steve Kennedy his own series, I’d watch it religiously. I’ve blogged about the topic before, but no one on any tour enjoys fishing more – or talks about it with fewer airs – than SK. I got my wish a few years back when I had the chance to fish a couple of days with him, and while they say you should never meet your heroes, the experience left me as more of an unabashed fanboy – not just of Steve, but of the whole Kennedy family, down to the dog (and even the worms in the bathtub in the basement).

I don’t think many people resent Jeff Gustafson’s win in Knoxville last week. Indeed, it was as distinctive and dominating a victory as we’ve seen in recent times, but in some respects his lapping of the field meant that it was a battle for second place…and that left lots of BASS Live time for Kennedy. As always, it was a treat. If I had my way, his show would be two-thirds fishing, combined with equal doses of him talking about tackle and taking random questions from the audience. I don’t know how it would rank with Nielsen, but in our house it would be a winner.
