She's a Firecracker, I Tell Ya

Not a big fireworks guy, not necessarily because I have anything against them, but mostly because I hate crowds, loud noises and staying up late. Nevertheless, I recognize that Fourth of July pyrotechnics are an important tradition, a way of celebrating our Independence, our communities and our union, even in these fractured times.

So while I’m not necessarily ruing the fact that I won’t be attending a fireworks display this week, I do recognize that it’s a loss for others who look forward to the spectacle and the togetherness. I even feel a little bit guilty, because earlier this year on my 50th birthday, my wife arranged for a fireworks show at Casa Vieja Lodge. Our friends in Guatemala did a bang up job (no pun intended) and made the birthday even more memorable than it would have otherwise been. That’s no easy feat because we landed 37 sailfish in three days.

While this year has been memorable in many disappointing and frustrating ways, I’m grateful that I got a show before everything fell apart – and maybe I’ll be a little more excited about get togethers on future Independence Days.
