On 'Em...Again

With his win at last week’s Bassmaster Eastern Open on Cherokee Lake, Matthew Robertson joins a small group of anglers who’ve twice qualified for the Classic or some other major championship through means other than just the main tour. The Kentucky angler qualified for the 2019 Classic on the Tennessee River by winning the Bassmaster Team Championship, and now he’ll head to Ray Roberts through the Opens.

That success puts him into a cadre of Triple A hammers that includes Texan Albert Collins, Oklahoma’s Chris Jones, Alabama’s David Kilgore, and of course the mack daddy of this elite cadre, Jeff Coble (along with the member emeritus, the late Bryan Kerchal).

While it’s certainly not easy to win a single tournament, any competent angler can get on a roll, catch a break, and make a charge at one of these one-shot titles. Repeating it is where you show that you know how to make the donuts. Robertson, it seems, belongs – and that’s a good thing because at 4th in the overall Opens standings, he’s in prime position to get a 2021 Elite Series invite.

If such an opportunity is extended to him, that’ll be his decision whether to take it. I just hope he can find a way to top his 2019 Night of Champions ensemble.
